How are masked debit/credit card users being i…

I know for a fact that billing companies can uniquely identify a customer even when masked debit/credit cards are used. A merchant can ban you from using a virtual card service even if the combination of user information (e.g., names, addresses), generated card numbers, and IP addresses have never been used.

How do they manage to do this? Is there some kind of metadata associated with a virtual payment that can be used to uncover how it was funded, and by whom?
