I am a complete noob at privacy laws, and couldn’t find too much information searching online.
As a Canadian citizen, what rights do I have against being spied on by the government? Is it better than worse than the US?
More importantly, what are the laws regarding my information being being collected and retained by private companies? How does it compare with the US? What about Europe’s GDPR?
Are there any laws requiring companies to disclose data breaches, delete my data if I ask, or tell me what they’ve collected about me (or even send me a copy)? Is there a distinction between personally identifiable information and “non-personal” information? How does this relate to Canadians using US companies like Google?
